Monday, I decided that I would leave a half hour early to work so I could run a few errands and grab something to eat. Could I really so lucky to get out of the house that early? Not with my luck! As I was driving down the interstate I randomly saw a chunk of silver metal fly through the air ahead of me. I couldn't see too clearly because there was a huge semi in lane next to me and slightly in front of me and I just thought that something flew off of the semi until all I could smell was burnt rubber. Once the semi was out of the way I saw where the debris was coming from. That "chunk" of metal came from a motorcycle that was in about a million pieces all over the interstate...why do I have to be a critical care nurse in times like these? (and what do you know, I was in my scrubs on my way to work!). So I pulled over and it took me a few minutes until I found the rider in the median lying unconscious in the fetal position. And out of the hundred cars on the interstate, a whole whopping 3 people pulled over to help...me (an ICU nurse), a lady (a CNA), and a guy who just happened to be a volunteer fire fighter. Lucky motorcyclist huh? Finally a couple other people who actually witnessed the accident pulled over too. So my husband wonders why motorcycles scare me? And I have to mention that the accident was in no way the motorcyclist fault. He was on his way home from work (I assume as he was wearing nice pants) who had on protective gear (full face helmet and a motorcycle jacket) but is unconsious and bleeding profusely from his nose and mouth. He was not driving stupid weaving in and out of cars and he was not speeding. A car did not see him and cut him off from the lane next to him. When the EMT arrived, I was able to leave and the motorcyclist was breathing and was slightly conscious (thank God he was wearing a helmet)!
Anyways - scared the crap out of me and now my hubby will probably never be able to get me on the back of his motorcycle again! - Sorry honey! I definately give kudos to everyone that helped call 911 and all the police and firemen who got there quickly to help - I have never seen an interstate cleared off so quickly! And thanks to the awesome police man who stopped 3 lanes of traffic on the interstate to help me get back to my car (I have no idea how I ran over these lanes to get to the guy without getting hit)...and sorry to the guy in the van who was passing on the shoulder at this time for getting him a ticket! Needless to say I did not get my errands done and was a few minutes late to work!

WOW~! Isn't great to be a NICU nurse in times like this!
ReplyDeleteholy crap, Sarah! thank goodness you were all there to help. it's unbelievable that people that witness things like that can just keep driving by. hopefully JD will choose to ride his new bike where there isn't a lot of traffic.
ReplyDeleteWow - that must have been really hard to see. The motorcyclist is lucky that you guys stopped. I can't believe more people didn't stop!
